My Famine Story by Sam Heraty

24/02/2012

Hello my name is Mathew Black and I`m going to tell you my famine story!

I was living in Westport, co. Mayo. The year was 1845 and I was enjoying some lumpar potatoes and milk. I heard my father cry: “Our potato crop is destroyed!” My mother and I ran outside to see what the damage was. As soon as I saw the crop I knew they had been struck with blight!

All our potatoes gradually rotted away. We need to find a solution to our problem, and fast. Days, weeks and months went by and we had ran out of clean milk and water. My mother fell ill and my father was out all day looking for work. My mother and father were dying and I had no choice but to enter the workhouse.

I arrived at the workhouse and I had an idea. I broke into the soup kitchen, grabbed all the food I could carry and escaped. I then decided to jump onto a coffin ship and sail to America!

After an 8 week journey hiding in the brig, I finally reached New York! I found a job selling news papers. One night as I gazed at the stars I dreamed about my parents back in Ireland.

The Wonderland

16/11/2011

The Wonderland, the Wonderland,
In Canada where you lie.
With all the children screaming,
In delight, it echoes in the sky,
With all the ice-cream shops,
I would stay with you day and night.
The rollercoasters fly by,
And whizz past my eyes,
They were like birds in the birds in the sky flying by.

The Wonderland, the Wonderland,
How I miss you so much,
But soon someday,
I will see you again.

In January last year
This field was just a grassy plain.
With no bricks metal nor wood in sight.

In March the builders started to arrive.
They measured the land,
And put fencing around the edges.

Soon bricks and scaffolding went up.
Trucks and cars flow in everyday
And the roundabout gets covered in muck.

But it is still nice to see my future go up.
The future that will turn into the present
On the 1st of September 2012.
